In the 1990s after retiring as BBC news anchor, Kenneth Kendall moved to the Isle of Wight and opened his eponymous gallery in Cowes. Together with his partner Mark, they built a stable of excellent marine artists and welcomed visitors and residents to add art to their walls, that captured moments on the sea.
While Mark provided the experience of art exhibitions, Kenneth’s love of art and sociable nature brought visitors over the threshold and the pair quickly became central to the Cowes social scene. Kenneth was “old school” in the nicest possible way: an expert on martinis, extremely hospitable, a stickler for etiquette, and unfailingly truthful. In 2007, they commissioned the current purpose-built gallery at Number One The Parade and continued to fill the space with excellent and varied works from an expanding list of artists. Their shared mission: to help customers find sea scenes to love and live with.
Kenneth and Mark’s legacy has continued since 2012 under the stewardship of Jeremy and Simon, retaining the focus on seascapes, harbour views and yachting, ably assisted by Lucy, the Kendalls family dog.
In the Gallery, paintings and sculptures are displayed with judiciously selected furniture and antiques. Here on our website every painting is presented in a furnished room to show how it looks in a living space.
Kendalls Fine Art continues to be a favourite destination for local and visiting art lovers. If you are in Cowes, stop by to enjoy some wonderful paintings and objet d’art, you might just hear Kenneth whisper – “Martini anyone?”
