Racing Home - The Lulworth, White Heather & Shamrock
During the pre-war days of the great racers, and later the J' class yachts, not all racing during the seasons was in the Solent or off Cowes, but many of these famous racers joined the circuits and regattas around the coasts, particularly the West Country races, but also around the East Coast such as Harwich and Southend. Yachts sailed to these venues under their crews, the owners seldom aboard, only joining their boats on race days. The painting is a little fancy, but shows these three yachts perhaps having a private unofficial race back to Cowes after weekend racing further west, catching the tide in the Needles Channel.
