Jenny's inspiration for this painting is based on her old sailing days, often crossing the Channel to France and Brittany, as that stretch of water always has a changing quality to it, sometimes a downright challenge in poor weather. But given tide and wind in one's favour it can bring you to your destination with ease, but sometimes not.
Jenny decided to show more of a robust vintage yacht (ketch) as her model to express the felicity of seas, and the yacht is sailing east, to the Solent, on a cruising 'jolly' as opposed to racing.
Jenny painted a ketch called "KENTRA", since as far as she knows she is still on the 'Classic' circuits and was about in the 1920's the era shown in painting - hence the coasting steamer in background. The sky in painting is a summer sky. The sky suggests blustery conditions with possible showers later - the reason the "KENTRA" is not using her topsail, thus taking the choppy waves in her stride.
